Alan Arkin

About Alan Arkin
Although Charlotte's late ex-husband, Maurice, wrote about Hollywood and Broadway actors, Charlotte edited one --- Alan Arkin. An actor's actor, who has always been courageous enough to stretch fully yet naturally into a huge variety of roles,  he has appeared in The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming!, Slums of Beverly Hills, Grosse Point Blank, The In-Laws, Edward Scissorhands, and Joshua Then and Now, to name just a few.

But Alan Arkin is also writes children's books, the first few of which Charlotte edited. When asked why, in 1995 radio Well, like most of the things I've done in my life besides acting, I just kind of fell into it. I wrote a small piece for my youngest son many years ago, just as an entertainment for him, to help him get through something that was happening in our lives that ... was a little bit difficult for him. And I wrote this story for him and people thought it was good enough to get published, so it got published.  I continued writing for him, and my other kids, and now my granddaughter. So, it just happened. I love it. Yeah, I love kids and I've worked with them a lot."

Charlotte worked with Alan on books like The Lemming Condition (above left) and The Clearing; he went on to work with other editors on books like One Present from Flekman's (above right).

A birthday greeting to Charlotte on her 85th Birthday (June 26, 2000) from Alan Arkin

"Happy, Happy Birthday, dear Charlotte.   What can I say to you that I haven't
said already?  You know the influence you've had on my writing, I've told you many times, but here it is now in public ...

"I often think that without your endless encouragement and gentle insight I never would have finished anything.  With the amount of manuscripts that must have come through your desk I always felt as if my scribbling were the first words you'd heard in months!  How did you manage to do that?

"Do you know that I can't put my fingers on a keyboard anymore without thinking, "What would Charlotte think of this?"

"Much love to you on this auspicious day.

"Your friend and fan,
Alan Arkin"
