Charlotte loves animals... especially dogs. Go to
Kid's
questions about Charlotte's Life and learn about some of her pets. But even
if you don't, you can sense it through her books. |

Combine Charlotte's deep commitment to honest literature for children,
with her belief that feelings matter, and her love and observation of nature and
its cycles, and you will understand why it was natural that in 1974, she wrote
one of the first picture books about death. This long-taboo topic was taken up
in My Grandson Lew, where a young boy struggles with grief, memory, and
comfort on learning some time after the fact of his grandfather's
death. |

| Books about feelings and moods |
Charlotte
has always believed that feelings are, at root, the same throughout
life, whether one is grown-up or a child. And she believes that feelings
are important. "We are all the same," she wrote in an article in
Horn Book,
"except that adults have found ways to buffer themselves against the
full-blown intensity of a child's emotions... we are not different from
the children we were --- only more experienced, better able to disguise
our feelings from others, if not ourselves." |
