Charlotte and her family in later years

Ned Shank, Charlotte's son-in-law, with Crescent, Charlotte's daughter, on their wedding day, October 20, 1977. Until his tragic early death at age 44 on November 30, 2000, Ned was also a writer, artist, and co-founder (with Crescent) of the Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow. Photo above is by Georgene Shank, Ned's mother --- who was for many years a school librarian.

To the left, a radiant Charlotte, also on CD and Ned's wedding day. Maurice stands behind her. Photo, Louise Terzia. Below, a picture of Ned and Crescent, taken in 1997 by portraitist Andrew Kilgore.

Stephen / Zee, Charlotte and Maurice's son, Crescent's brother. This photo was taken in 1991, at Maurice's New York memorial, at the Century Club. Stephen has lived with Grace C, who is camera-shy.

Charlotte was also very close to her son-in-law, Crescent's husband,  Ned Shank, left. At the time of his death, Ned had also published one children's book, The Sanyasin's First Day.

Charlotte's literary legacy continues in the books she has written, the authors she has edited and the books they have written, and the annual The Charlotte Zolotow Award & Lecture. Both her children and her late son-in-law also continue to honor Charlotte's work in different ways.  Zee, Charlotte's son, is a voracious, passionate reader, who also holds a degree in English from NYU (as well as one in statistics from Colombia). Crescent is, and Nedhillary, cz, cd.jpg (82548 bytes) was, also a writer. As a couple, they were active in working for readers and writers in many ways, an aim Crescent will carry on. (Pictured above right, left to right: at a benefit to raise money for the Arkansas Literacy Council in 1987: Hillary Clinton, then First Lady of Arkansas, standing --- was giving a speech --- Arkansas Senator Dale Bumpers, in grey suit, seated; Crescent, in blue jumper, seated to Senator Bumper's right. Across the table and down at the far right of the photo, in a green jacket, is Charlotte, listening attentively and with approval. Photo by Betty Maffei.)

In addition, Crescent and Ned were co-founders of The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow, which provides residency fellowships of one to three months to working writers. Charlotte has been a substantial donor to this non-profit organization, as has Zee.

This striking portrait of Charlotte, above, taken in her early seventies by portrait photographer Andrew Kilgore in Little Rock. (Charlotte was in Arkansas to visit her daughter Crescent, below, in a photo by Susan Storch. Some people see a family resemblance. Do you?).
