Charlotte & Dorothy
Charlotte and her older sister Dorothy were born on the same day --- June
26 --- six years apart. Here are some pictures of them --- some together, some
just of Dorothy --- throughout their many, many years together.
From left to right: Dorothy Shapiro, about age 12, the girls' mother, Ella
Bernstein Shapiro, and Charlotte, about age 6. This picture was probably taken
at the Fairmount Hotel in the Catskills, where the family sometimes spent the
summer.

A very young and visionary-looking Dot, above, in her Wellesley
graduation picture, and to the right, with her husband, Joseph A. Arnof.
Although Dorothy and Joseph always lived in New York (except when they were
traveling around the world) Joseph was a native of Arkansas, the state that
Dorothy's niece (Charlotte's daughter, Crescent) was later to adopt as her home.
Joseph was quite a few years older than Dot.

Dorothy
Shapiro Arnof, editor, Macmillan. She looks like she means business, and she
does! Dorothy edited non-fiction textbooks, with a special fondness for
history. Joseph is pictured right.

Above, Charlotte, left, and Dot, right, at Dot's
retirement party at Macmillan's. Dot was hit with the death of her
husband, Joseph A. Arnof, and retirement from the editorial position at which
she'd worked for many years, in the same week.

Two remarkable sisters, Dorothy
Shapiro Arnof, and Charlotte Shapiro Zolotow. This photo was taken when both
were in their seventies, by Ned Shank, Charlotte's son-in-law. It was taken at
Lyndhurst, the National Trust's historic house in Westchester, not far from
where Charlotte lives.
A sad, thoughtful looking Charlotte, taken at Maurice's memorial service in
New York in 1991. Next to her, and also in the portrait to the right, is James Cherry, Dorothy's long-time companion.
In the group picture, Dorothy is on the far right.
Charlotte's book called Big Sister and Little Sister.
Could it possibly be autobiographical?
