Kathleen T. Horning

Kathleen T. Horning, Coordinator, Charlotte Zolotow Award and Lecture

"My favorite childhood book was a lovely brown-toned picture book called But Not Billy. Not only did I insist on having it read to me several times a day, I also insisted on sleeping with it, as most children would a doll or teddy bear. My mother would prop it up against the bars in my crib so it would be the last thing I'd see before I'd fall asleep and the first thing I'd see when I awakened.

"Years later, long after I had become a children's librarian, my mother sent me my own well-worn and tattered copy of But Not Billy and I was delighted to discover that it had been written by none other than Charlotte Zolotow! I consider myself lucky to have been one of the many children who was nurtured by Charlotte's words."
