Charlotte, her husband & children

This page shows Charlotte as a young woman, along with her then-young
husband, and then-young children.

Maurice
Zolotow, Charlotte's husband for 33 years. A writer, primarily of show business
biographies, he was about 26 when this photograph was taken. The two were
married on April 14, 1938, and divorced in 1969, but remained friends after the
divorce, up to Maurice's death in March 14, 1991.

And this striking portrait of Maurice was taken later, in 1943; he was 34.

Stephen, above, age 3, in a 1951 Christmas card. He was still an only child, but
his sister Ellen was soon to arrive. And Steve, a little older, below, with
a rather sexy-looking Charlotte, relaxing in a park.

To left, Charlotte's father, Louis J. Shapiro, squats next to a baby
carriage, while his wife, Charlotte's mother, Ella, leans over it. On the right,
also squatting, is Charlotte, about age 37, and in the

12,
with brother Zee, then Stephen, at about age 18. This souvenir photo was taken
at the Waldorf Astoria, where they, Charlotte, and Maurice were attending a
performance by comedian Jack Benny, about whom Maurice was writing.
Charlotte, right, trim, dashing, elegant, intelligence gleaming from her
eyes: a marvelous portrait, photographer unknown, taken around this
time.

To left: May, 1967: Charlotte, Ellen (exactly two years before she became
Crescent Dragonwagon), and two of Ellen's roommates from Stockbridge School,
which Ellen attended in 1967-68. The school, fictionalized, would later become
pivotal in the novel she published, as Crescent Dragonwagon, The Year It
Rained. The book was published in 1985, by Macmillan.
